Cleaver Dermatology was founded in 1986 by Dr. Lloyd Cleaver, D.O., a Kirksville native and graduate of Truman State University and ATSU-KCOM. After completing his dermatology residency and serving in the U.S. Navy—where he led the dermatology department at the San Diego Navy Regional Medical Center—Dr. Cleaver returned to his hometown with a mission to bring quality dermatologic care to Northeast Missouri.
He opened our first clinic in the Gutensohn Clinic, where for over 20 years he was the sole dermatologist serving the region. Dr. Cleaver’s commitment to patient care extended beyond the clinic walls—he founded a dermatology residency program at Northeast Regional Medical Center in the early 1990s and later launched a Mohs surgery fellowship to help train the next generation of dermatologists.
Cleaver Dermatology truly became a family practice when Dr. Cleaver’s three sons—Drs. David, Jonathan and Nathan Cleaver—followed in his footsteps. All three are alumni of Truman State and ATSU-KCOM and joined the practice during the early 2000s. With their addition, the practice quickly outgrew its original space and moved into our current state-of-the-art facility on Country Club Drive. Dr. Nathan would go on to open his own practice in the Georgia area, but still supports the Kirksville practice by coordinating with our pathology department to process biopsies.
Today, Cleaver Dermatology operates six clinic locations across Missouri and Iowa, offering comprehensive care in medical, surgical, cosmetic dermatology, dermatopathology, and aesthetic skin spa services.
