Welcome to Trenton Terri's Top Picks...

In an effort to effectively market chamber businesses, a new program has been developed entitled “Terri’s Top Picks”. Once every few weeks, a service or product will be selected from area chamber businesses. The criteria for selection will be based on appeal of the product or service to many people across various age categories. The general public and chamber members are encouraged to try the product or service and fill out a comment card (available here). The comment cards will be reviewed with the “Terri’s Top Pick of the Year” to be awarded at the chamber’s annual meeting.

Grilled Chicken - el Nopal

el Nopal chickenLittle did Jose` Murillo know when he opened a Mexican restaurant 3 years ago this past May that El Nopal would become one of the hottest eating establishments in the area. After having expanded the building twice with additional plans for an outdoor patio, El Nopal, at its Trenton, location serves over 300 orders of Grilled Chicken each week. Window Washing - PDQ Cleaning

PDQ CleaningThere is an age old joke about a young lady courting a gentleman and to cinch the marriage he states that he “washes windows too”.

The chore of washing windows is one that no one really looks forward to unless your name is Robert Ely, from PDQ Cleaning Services in Trenton. While most of us consider washing windows to be a big chore, Robert does so with a smile and with quality second to none.

The window washing service offered by PDQ is one part of their total cleaning solution. Most businesses have their windows washed once per month. Homeowners choose to have the service on an as needed basis. Window washing is offered as a standalone service as frequently or as infrequently as the client chooses.

Each job is bid specifically based on the requirements due to types of windows. PDQ offers a free no obligation estimate on all window cleaning services for both businesses and homes. Most home window washing occurs seasonally due to the weather in northern Missouri. However, commercial window cleaning is done throughout the year. Robert Ely visits The Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce office to clean the windows when the weather is frigid cold during winter, as well as during very hot summer time. He always arrives in a positive mood and does not disrupt business in any way. One time, he arrived only to find that we had several cases of Trenton magazines for tourists sitting in his way. He patiently and carefully moved the boxes as if he were a member of our team and then put them back once the windows were sparkling clean. Ely is not the only person who washes windows for PDQ. Several other employees wash them as part of the house cleaning service offered by PDQ.

Recently after the new construction of apartments on Oklahoma Avenue, PDQ workers were found washing the new windows and removing brand stickers and the film that accompanies new windows from the manufacturing process. The company and its employees work hard to accommodate their customer’s hours and traffic flow in businesses.

When comparing the price of hiring PDQ to paying an employee to do it, the PDQ solution just makes sense. When business owners consider the hourly wage paid to employees to wash windows, plus unemployment, FICA, worker productivity, and keeping the employee ready to serve the core business need, the chamber has found it cheaper to outsource to PDQ. The quality is far better too due to the PDQ window cleaning solution and expertise. They supply all cleaning supplies, as well as necessary ladders, sponges, cloths, etc. Now that spring cleaning is behind us, if numerous rain storms have prevented window washing, give PDQ a call for your free quote at 660-359-2836. You will be glad that you did! PDQ-“People Delivery Quality”.

Heartland Milk - Hy-Vee

heartland milk trenton missouriRemember drinking milk from glass bottles as a child? Those memories of drinking ice cold, fresh milk are once again brought back by Trenton Hy-Vee selling Heartland Creamery milk. Heartland Creamery, located in Newark, Missouri, has over 6000 Holstein cows. This great quality milk is free of rBGH/rBST growth hormones. The close proximity of the dairy to Trenton Hy-Vee makes delivery of fresh milk from the farm to Trenton very easy. According to Terry Gott, dairy department manager, deliveries of Heartland milk occur each Tuesday and Friday. Shoppers who do not wish to use the recyclable glass bottles are still able to have the Heartland products in plastic jugs.

The advantages of utilizing glass bottled milk are that it is definitely colder, absorbs no odor from the carton, and is the GREEN thing to do. The glass bottles are made of thicker glass so that they won’t break easily. Not only are the bottles recyclable but are also environmentally friendly by not adding waste to landfills. Shoppers can simply rinse the bottles and return them to customer service or place them with their grocery order at the checkout. Each returned glass bottle results in a bottle deposit of $1.50 being returned to the shopper.

Although Heartland Creamery promotes old-fashioned service, the processing and bottling are all state-of-the-art, right down to the way they wash the glass bottles. The bottle washing machine can hold about 300 bottles at one time. First, the bottles are completely submerged into a cleaning solution. Next, they are power washed, rinsed with fresh water, then sanitized and sent to the bottle filler for fresh, creamy milk from their own herds! Any profits from Heartland Creamery support faith based work for troubled adolescents and adults. Tours of the facility can be arranged by calling 1-877-HUG A COW.

The Trenton store carries Heartland milk in skim, 1%, 2%, whole, and chocolate flavor. The milk is competitively priced for its quality. Plastic jugs of whole Heartland milk are currently priced at $3.58; $3.38 for 2%, $3.28 for 1%, $3.08 for skim, and $4.18 for chocolate. One-half gallon glass bottles of whole milk are priced at $2.68, $2.55 for 2%, $2.45 for skim, and $3.18 for chocolate. Drop by your local Trenton Hy-Vee today and pick up a few bottles of Heartland Creamery ice cold milk which is Terri’s Top Pick for week #4.

Sunrise Gazebos - Country Heritage Furniture

Sunrise GazebosWith the high price of gas, many area citizens are finding that vacationing at home in their own backyard is a great option. Sunrise Gazebos, which are sold by chamber member Country Heritage Furniture ¼ mile west of Jamesport on Highway 6, are a smart investment that allows homeowners to "vacation" without leaving home. We purchased our Sunrise Gazebo about 10 years ago due to its fine workmanship and quality. The builder for Sunrise Gazebos is Stephen Eicher. Spending time in a Sunrise Gazebo provides a great haven for hanging out with family and friends. One can add perks such as electricity, ceiling fans, comfortable furniture, or a picnic table.

Country Heritage Furniture currently carries gazebos in both pressure treated wood, as well as maintenance free vinyl. Two styles of roofs are available including standard style and one with a cupola. Owners may select asphalt shingles, metal raised row roofing, or rubber slate shingles. The rubber slate shingles are very durable, but have the look of expensive slate. Spindles for the railings are available in plain or turned styles. Those wanting protection from insects may choose screens and/or windows. Seating options are also available. Prices for vinyl gazebos, at Country Heritage Furniture near Jamesport, range from $3695 (6 foot size) to $18,000 for 14 x 28 feet oval and rectangular styles. Flooring can be non-existent, wooden, or made of composite material similar to TREK decking.

Wooden gazebos are made from the finest materials and lumber available. All edges are routered and hand-sanded to make them safe and attractive. Wooden gazebos are stained and sealed to retain the new look longer. After 3 to 4 years, the wooden gazebos need a coat of water proofing in order to retain the original color. Screen frames are available for the wooden structures. Sizes range from 8 x 8 up to 14 x 14. Prices for wooden gazebos range from $3095 to $7700. The highest price model includes double roof, stain sealer, Trex floor, screen package with door, screen under the floor, and seats. Gazebos are delivered free within a 30 mile radius at no extra charge.

In addition to gazebos, Country Heritage offers a huge line of Amish handcrafted furniture in oak, walnut, and other hardwoods. Headache Pillo - Chiro Solutions

After working hours on a computer, in the yard, or being just simply worn out, it is now possible to have a "spa" treatment at home that is actually good for your health. A Headache Ice Pillo from ChiroSolutions PC, at 2910 Oklahoma Avenue in Trenton, is the answer. The neck pillows have a gel liner that can be chilled or heated depending on varying therapeutic needs. People suffering from headaches have found them beneficial. The pillows also work well for treating whiplash symptoms, neck tension from working on a computer all day, or chronic neck pain. While traveling, the pillows make a great travel companion and keep the neck properly aligned while sitting or lying down.

Dr. Crystal Whitaker recommends utilizing the pillow as a heat treatment for muscle tightness or chronic neck pain. Chilling the gel core works well for relieving headaches or after an accident or injury . The pillows are also available with vibrating massagers. One may choose various covers all of which are washable. The standard neck pillow costs $35.00.

Drs. Damon and Crystal Whitaker take a holistic, preventative approach to chiropractic care for their patients. At ChiroSolutions, both doctors focus on detection of problem areas even if no symptoms are present. Posture checks and patient evaluations lead to treatment solutions. The clinic treats patients ranging in age from newborns to the elderly. By focusing on prevention with regular check-ups, adjustments can be made negating the possibility of long-term damage to the spine, muscles, and neck.

While chiropractic adjustment of the spine and extremities is the primary treatment utilized by Drs. Damon and Crystal, cold laser and exercise therapy provide additional methods of treatment to aid in the healing process. Laser treatment promotes tissue healing from the inside out. In addition to the cervical neck pillows, the clinic carries a full line of lumbar support cushions, shoe inserts to support feet properly, and Sinu Cleanse neti pots, as seen on Oprah, to relieve sinus pain and congestion.

ChiroSolutions offers a payment plan for treatment called Care Credit. It is a medical charge card that offers no interest if paid within 12 months. The program works well for those needing extended care and extends payment out over a period of time making regular chiropractic care an affordable option. Call ChiroSolutions at 660-359-3500 or drop by 2910 Oklahoma Avenue next to State Farm Insurance to purchase a neck pillow or for a spine evaluation. Get relief from back and neck pain today!

Deli Sandwiches - Main Stop

Main Stop in TrentonOne of the best sandwiches in town is found at Trenton Main Stop. With high gas prices, this product is affordable with a cost of about three dollars. The business, which is owned by Lee and Laura Peters, welcomes guests and residents to Trenton at the west entrance on Highway 6. The convenience store, which also serves as a fuel station, offers a full line of foods, beverages, as well as dine-in options. In the fresh deli case, shoppers find great delicatessen sandwiches which are made fresh daily. Main Stop will also prepare takeout food for meetings or families on the go.

The deli sandwiches begin with fresh onion, wheat, or plain buns, loads of meat consisting of turkey, ham, or roast beef, high quality cheeses, crisp lettuce, onions, and condiments of choice. Along with the sandwiches, pickles, handmade salads, and bakery cookies and breads are available. My personal favorite is smoked turkey, co jack cheese, and spicy mustard on onion bun. Fresh green salads, crab salad, tuna salad, and fruit are available for those wanting a light meal. Small submarine sandwiches are available for smaller appetites . The regular sandwiches are large enough to fill one up or can be split with a friend. Custom orders are available too.

At the drink counter, shoppers find fountain drinks, cappuccino, sweet tea, unsweetened tea, and coffee. In the drink cooler imported beers, domestic beers, energy drinks, soda, juice, and water offer something for everyone.

WMH Outpatient Clinic

Hospital TrentonWith high gas prices and busy lifestyles, it makes perfect sense to see medical specialists locally at Wright Memorial Hospital Specialty Clinic, as opposed to driving to Kansas City or St. Joseph. The quality of care is equal to the “specialist in Kansas City” because in many cases, the specialist is a city doctor who brings his or her clinic to Trenton. Wright Memorial Hospital, which is part of the St. Luke’s Health System, has delivered high quality, patient centered care for decades in the Trenton area.

Many different types of specialists are available. Heart patients may see a physician from Cardiovascular Consultants, PC. Mid-America Gastro-Intestinal Consultants offers a full range of gastroenterology services including colonoscopies. Cancer patients have grown to trust the oncology clinic, while pulmonary patients can be treated by a physician from Midwest Pulmonary Consultants, PC. Telemedicine clinics are available for cardiology and neurology services. Services for ear, nose and throat (ENT), podiatry and urology are also available at Wright Memorial Hospital.

In addition to the disciplines mentioned, mammography, chemotherapy, MRI/MRA, and ultrasounds are offered. Results from any tests may be viewed by experts at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, as well as local radiologists, doctors, and medical personnel.

It is no longer necessary to waste an entire day and a tank of gas by driving to Kansas City for medical treatment. Known once as a “band aid station” Wright Memorial is the “best place to get care, the best place to give care” close to home leaving time for family and friends. Our local hospital offers quality care and expertise that is second to none.

Booking appointments is easy through a local phone call to 660-359-5621, ext. 173 or toll free 888-559-5621, ext. 173. There is no need to wait in long lines upon arriving at the hospital. Pre-registration can be done via the St. Luke’s website at https://www.saintlukeshealthsystem.org/app/Form%20Builder/Forms/PreRegistration.asp?campus=wmh. After pre-registration, simply enter the outpatient waiting room, check in with patient access, and wait in the comfort of the lobbies to see the doctor.

Loaded Smothered Chicken - McJ's on the Green

trenton missouriJust over one year ago, McJ’s On the Green restaurant opened to the public at Riverside Country Club in Trenton. Previously, the country club restaurant had been a member only establishment. Eager to increase business for the country club, the board voted to outsource the restaurant to local entrepreneur Denise McNabb and to open it to the public.

No stranger to the kitchen Mrs. McNabb had spent years feeding thousands of employees at Premium Standard Food processing plant at Milan. Several PSF employees had commented that Denise’s “cafeteria food” tasted better than Christmas dinner at grandma’s house. Dubbed one of the best corporate cafeterias in the region, Denise brought her well-honed skills to life by opening one of Trenton’s newest eating establishments. The menu is tailored around a golfing theme in fitting with its lovely surroundings of the 100-year old Riverside Country Club.

One local favorite is Loaded, Smothered Chicken, which is available as an entrée` or in sandwich form. The chicken breast, which is grilled, is topped with grilled mushrooms, bacon, cheese, and barbeque sauce. For those not preferring mushrooms, the chef is happy to custom make any order.

A host of appetizers, crispy salads (“The Greens”), delectable side dishes, sandwiches (“Sand Wedges”) steaks, seafood, and gourmet desserts offer a wide array of choices. A children’s menu, called “Little Divots”, is also available. Steaks are cooked to order and are cut fresh daily. Each dinner is preceded with the serving of pocket bread. Entrees` are called “Championship Courses”, while appetizers are referred to as “The Driving Range”.

Diners may sit in the dining room or on the deck overlooking the western skyline of Trenton as the sun sets on the horizon. During most days, golfers and swimmers add to the lively atmosphere of McJ’s On the Green.
Business hours for the restaurant are: Wednesday for lunch and during the evening through the summer months, Thursday and Friday from 11-2 and 5 to close and Saturday from 5 to close. However, McJ’s is open for special events, catering, and parties at times other than those listed above. Denise can design a menu based on the budget of each group or family for special catering.

Sometimes people choose to not entertain in their own home due to the preparation necessary. No need to shy away from entertaining—simply call Denise at 660-359-2280 and have her bring the party food, supplies, dinnerware, bar, drinks, etc. to your home.

It is not unusual to see groups from neighboring towns dining at McJ’s. The word is out; Trenton has a marketable commodity in McJ’s On the Green. If you have not yet had the pleasure of dining at McJ’s, make it a point to go there this week; you will be glad that you did. Keep McJ’s Gift Certificates in mind with the holidays right around the corner.

Fresh shipments of meat arrive 2 times per week at Save A Lot insuring only the best quality.

The meat department controls shelf life by not exceeding 2 days for ground products and 4 days for red meat and pork. Everything that needs trimming stays within ¼ inch insuring little if any waste. In addition, the meat department makes their own bratwurst and sausage in 1 and 2 pound bags, as well as Italian bulk sausage.

If you like the taste of barbeque but do not grill, you may take a rack of the baby back ribs, sprinkle them with a small bit of cayenne pepper, some minced garlic, ¾ cup of water in the bottom of the baking dish, cover with foil, and bake in the oven at around 200 degrees for 5 hours, during the last 30 minutes coat the top with Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbeque Sauce and enjoy!

Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbeque Sauce got its start in 1985, when Chef Larry Raymond perfected the family’s recipe and entered the sweet and tangy barbeque sauce into the country’s largest rib cook-off. Raymond had acquired the name “Sweet Baby Ray” while playing basketball on Chicago’s West Side. Raymond’s entry beat out over 700 entries in the national competition. Within one year of that national win, 3 high school friends formed a company with the award winning sauce keeping a simple philosophy about barbeque---“The Sauce is Boss!”

6in1 Screwdriver - Trenton Hardware

trenton hardwareAfter having grown up to the adjoining McNabb farm just east of Trenton, I always have to laugh when I think of Jack and Dale’s Trenton Hardware slogan, “If We Ain’t Got It, You Don’t Need It”. For those who have known the family and shop at Trenton Hardware, the slogan is very true, but it also fits the sense of humor that both father and son have. The inventory of Trenton Hardware is remarkable when one looks at the rows and rows of tools, plumbing supplies, gardening supplies, and a host of other things that homeowners and contractors need.

Family owned “Mom and Pop” businesses are becoming a thing of the past so it is more important than ever that we shop locally at stores like Trenton Hardware. Our local businesses count on area shoppers to keep the businesses open year after year. Sometimes it is necessary to go out of town to shop, but it is more important to try local first. Sometimes you will find that local is actually cheaper, especially considering the rising cost of gas.
One item, the 6-In-1 heavy duty screwdriver by Enderes Tools is a great value and very handy to have in your purse, car, and household. I have given dozens of these great screwdrivers for gifts. The happy recipients comment months later how handy their 6-in-1s are.

The screwdriver includes: #1 Phillips bit, #2 Phillips bit, ¼” nut driver, a quick change holding tube that is very easy to operate, ¾” flat bit, 5/18” flat bit, and a 5 1/16” nut driver. Enderes Tools’ pride is providing the ultimate in professional quality forged hand tools.

The 6-In-1 comes in 2 colors: easy to spot, fluorescent orange and black. Each color has Trenton Hardware logo on the side. The price is $4 each. These screwdrivers make perfect stocking stuffers, gift bag stuffers, or grab bag gifts.

In addition to picking up some great quality merchandise, you can also catch up on the happenings in downtown Trenton from frequent visitors from nearby businesses. BORN Footwear from Brown's Shoe Fit

Trenton ShoesAre you looking for a classical looking, comfortable shoe? Look no further than Brown’s Shoe Fit in Williams Shopping Center in Trenton. BORN shoes are hand sewn with meticulous attention to detail combined with fresh, innovative styles. The company utilizes Opanka construction which is a technique that hand sews the upper, sock lining, and outsole together in a single process. This method makes BORN shoes very flexible and creates a natural cushioning effect. BORN utilizes the world’s finest leathers which makes them soft and long-wearing.

Brown’s Shoe Fit began carrying the line about 12 years ago. The local shoe store carries women’s BORN shoes in both sandal and loafer styles. They also carry Mary Jane, oxford, and boot styles of the popular line.

The shoes come in ½ and whole sizes and are noted for having more toe room in keeping with European style. Sandals are available in whole sizes only.
Some styles of the shoes have DRYZ liner. This insole contains a patented ReScent agent that destroys odor and fights the growth of fungi and bacteria. The lining wicks moisture away from the foot and transfers it to a layer of copolymer foam. The foam gels the moisture and continually dissipates it throughout the day, and it completely disappears when the shoes are removed.

The price range of the shoes is from $89 to $109. Occasionally, shoppers will find a BORN shoe on the clearance rack in the $50 range. The high-quality of BORN shoes makes them last for years while retaining their shape. Local BORN shoppers have found that they can wear the shoes for many, many hours each day with no foot fatigue. They are as comfortable to walk in as regular walking shoes. Many of the styles have a cushioned foot bed that “massages” the foot.
Mark Morse, owner of Brown’s Shoe Fit in Trenton, is happy to special order any BORN shoe that he might not have in stock. While the inventory is huge in the local store, if a style is not locally available, the store can have it delivered in about 7 working days.

Trenton is very lucky to have a local shoe store that specializes in high-quality leather shoes. The store offers a great selection, easy parking and access, as well as great customer service. Drop by Brown’s Shoe Fit and pick up a new pair of BORN shoes for fall; your feet will be happy that you did.

Gift Bags from Dollar Plus & Total Entertainment

Gift bags trenton missouriDon’t you hate spending a lot of money on wrapping paper or gift bags only to have them destroyed? Sometimes I have spent so much on wrapping that little has been left over for the gift inside. Recently, I discovered gift bags for $1 at Dollar Plus, which is located in Total Entertainment. The very large gift bags, about 24” x 20”, are also $1 and are made of very high quality paper.

With tight economy, numerous birthday parties, Christmas, and special events, the Dollar Store is a great place to find that perfect gift. I am astounded at the selection in the Dollar Plus Store. Owners Larry and Nancy Cook, state that many shoppers had asked for this type of store in Trenton. There is a great selection of greeting cards, helium balloons, party favors, and wrapping items. Those persons enjoying scrapbooking will find a well-stocked craft section that also includes unfinished wood products, beading products, finished country crafts, and art supplies. I recall with 3 children in school spending lots of time and money finding gifts for birthday parties. Sometimes, you may have several invites in the same week. It is possible to pick out a great gift that will be popular without breaking the family budget.

Everything that one needs to run a household such as cleaning supplies, kitchen utensils, table runners, placemats, cookware, and mugs is offered in the store. Incense and a good selection of candles are found along with photo albums, picture frames, pet toys, make-up, figurines, coloring books, puzzles, and many great toys for children. Reading glasses and sunglasses are available for $1.00. About 95% of the items in the store at priced at $1. A few of the items are priced higher and special orders can sometimes cost more than $1. Mrs. Cook is happy to special order any item that she does not stock.

There is a great selection of baby supplies and gift items, as well as a huge selection of silk flowers. Men will enjoy the store as well with tools to sort through. The Total Entertainment section of the store still carries all of the items that they have been noted for such as videos, candles, jewelry, and tanning service. Drop by Total Entertainment and Dollar Plus on East 9th Street. There is no need to take a bunch of money along. A few dollars will go a long way in one of Trenton’s newest stores!!
