Welcome to Trenton Chamber Spotlights...

In an effort to effectively market chamber businesses, a new program has been developed entitled “Chamber Spotlights”. Once every few weeks, three businesses will be selected from our member list. The general public and chamber members are encouraged to shop at the businesses and fill out a comment card (available here).

To make way for a new year's worth of exciting products, we have archived the Chamber Top Picks from 2008, you may still view them by clicking here. Look for a brand new crop of great, local products in 2009!

Barnes Greenhouse Perennials

Barnes Greenhouse - Trenton MissouriWay back in 1890, Benjamin and Elizabeth Barnes began growing and selling lettuce, tomatoes, and radishes marketing them by horse and wagon, as well as rail. That long-standing business, known as Barnes Greenhouses, made a transition to selling flower and vegetable plants in the 1940s. Currently, the 5th generation family-owned business has grown to 40 greenhouses and is marketing plants locally and to 4 Midwest states. Over 10 trucks per day leave the greenhouse during full production in the spring.

Hundreds of varieties of annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, combination planters, and vegetables are grown and sold each year. In 1990, the business opened a retail garden center which additionally markets trees, shrubs and combination containers specifically designed for the retail department. The garden center will open for the season this year on March 23 and is pleased to be holding many of their prices stable, keeping their plants affordable for area gardeners. Locally, shoppers may also purchase Barnes Greenhouses plants at Orscheln’s Farm and Home as well as Hy-Vee.

During the peak spring season, over 50 seasonal employees work to deliver high quality plants to area gardeners. The business continually strives to improve production methods, utilizing new ideas in the industry. Recent examples include a punchable transplanting machine, automated watering systems and improved seed sowing methods.

Being conscious of its impact on the environment, Barnes Greenhouse is utilizing some biodegradable pots called “coir pots” which are similar to peat pots. The pot may be planted along with the plant. This protects roots, is less messy, and does not have a negative impact on the environment. The company expects sales in vegetable and other edible plants to soar this season with national interest on “going green”, organic growing, farmer’s markets, and people utilizing their yards to grow their own food.

Annual and vegetable seed sowing begins in December while some perennial seeds are sown up to a year before they are marketed. Perennials are vernalized over winter in the original tray or an intermediary container. During the late winter, perennials must be gradually warmed up in the greenhouses to prepare for spring sales and shipment to other retail outlets.

While the buyers for Barnes Greenhouse pride themselves in bringing new, exciting varieties to gardening enthusiasts, they also keep old-fashioned, favorite perennials in their selections. Bleeding hearts, black-eyed Susans and hostas are just three of the traditional choices in our Zone 5 area. Perennials are a fabulous way to begin or supplement one’s flower garden. They can be a wonderful addition to the landscape returning year after year providing increased value and beauty throughout the season.

Coneflowers will be popular perennials for this year with several new varieties including: Sundown, which is orange, Summer Sky, which is light orange with rose halo, Harvest Moon, which is golden yellow and golden orange, as well as the original Magnus, which is pink.

Another popular perennial this year is anticipated to be Hakenechloa “Aureola”, which has been named 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year. It is a golden, Japanese forest grass. The golden foliage of this plant is arching which works well for borders or cascading over a rock wall. This prize-winning perennial should be planted in shade or partial shade.

The staff at Barnes Greenhouse is happy to offer advice on plant selection. They offer special potting services, designing and planting various containers for their customers. This includes custom designed pots, baskets and more. Barnes Greenhouses will plant in containers brought from home or containers purchased in their retail center. The custom designs can be adjusted for any event or special occasion including table decorations, gifts or memorials.

Many special events and sales are planned this year. Bare Root Fruit Tree Days is planned for March 26-March 28th. During this exciting event, apple, peach, cherry, and pear trees will be available, as well as small fruit plants, Weeping Cherry Snow Fountain trees, and peonies. Interested persons may call 359-2699 to have an order reserved for them.

STIHL Leaf Blowers from Moores Farm Supply

Moores Farm SupplyLittle did Donnie Moore realize way back in 1976 that he would have the hottest place to drink coffee every morning, as well as being able to meet the needs of farmers and homeowners in the northern part of Missouri. Even though area farmers and coffee drinkers like to sit around and catch up on the latest news there, they also like to buy from Moore’s Farm Supply due to the high level of customer service and the quality products that are sold. STIHL products are very popular items due to their reliability and value.

We recently purchased a STIHL leaf blower that is easy for a woman to start and use. The blowers come in three sizes which are measured in terms of air volume. I was able to clean my flower beds which were laden with leaves left from last fall in minutes, as opposed to days. There is one model that is a back pack. In addition, one may purchase a leaf blower with a vacuum bag or gutter attachment.

Area fire fighters or farmers burning CRP ground utilize STIHL leaf blowers to put out fires. The motors are 2 cycles which require a mixture of gas and oil, along with 1 spark plug. They are not heavy so using one for longer jobs would not be tiring.

Another popular STIHL product is the shredder vacuum which is like a leaf blower with a bag. It will shred leaves and small debris turning it into mulch or compost material.

STIHL saves homeowners from climbing ladders to trim trees with gas powered tree trimmers that reach up to 12 feet. There are many different hand held pruners and saws that can be used for tree and bush trimming.

Weed eating is easily done with either straight or curved shaft models. They come in both 2 and 4 stroke models, and are available with a feature called easy start. Consumers may also purchase brush blades that will cut plants, shrubs, and trees up to about 2” in diameter.

With more citizens “going green” by producing their own garden vegetables and fruits, STIHL mini tillers make working the ground and weeding an easy job. The tillers may be purchased with an easy start feature and are light weight at 21 pounds.

Some households have a need for several tools such as: a saw, leaf blower, tree pruner, aerator, edger, etc. Instead of purchasing several individual tools, STIHL makes a motor with all of the various attachments which saves money and storage space. It is called the KOMBI system.

The STIHL products last for decades provided that they are maintained. In addition to the high quality, the implements may be serviced locally at Moore’s Farm Supply. The store could actually have 2 mottos—“The Coffee is Always On” and “Our Service and Products Are Second to None”. Drop by Moore’s Farm Supply on 17th Street soon to pick up some great tools to keep your property looking neat and maintained; the coffee is on the house. If you arrive early around 7:30 a.m. you just might get to hear area farmer, Jim Binney, tell a joke on himself.

Degrees from NCMC

North Central Missouri CollegeWant to change your life forever? Consider seeking a degree at North Central Missouri College. With rampant downsizing and lay-offs, now is the perfect time to start or continue your education. Literally a world of possibilities is opened up once you have a degree from North Central Missouri College in hand.

I would strongly encourage high school seniors to continue their education directly after high school. However, I, along with hundreds of other NCMC students chose to attend college as a non-traditional (older) student. I recall my first day on campus being scared to death as I headed into the classroom. By the time I reached the 3rd floor of Geyer Hall (pre-elevator days), I was hyper-ventilating. My fears were short-lived due to first meeting two students who were older than me. All of the staff and faculty members from the college were very helpful and did not seem to notice that I was so “old”. I also received a lot of support from the late Lloyd Ketcham and the late Mary Louise Hoffman, who encouraged me along the way.

While some argue that is it possible to find a good job without a degree, I maintain that the degree is what sets one apart from other candidates when HR professionals must select the more qualified candidate. Potential students may have all types of things that are considered barriers to attending college such as: children, lack of funds, work schedules, etc. However, there are many resources available to help students overcome those barriers so that they will be successful in college while obtaining a degree.

With April being Community College month, now is the perfect time to give North Central Missouri College a call to inquire about summer classes or a schedule for next fall. One does not initially need to know what degree they want. General education classes are needed in almost all degrees. Also, it is acceptable to change your degree along the way.

Regardless of one’s interests, there is a degree that is sure to fit any career or academic goal. With articulation agreements with vocational technical schools and 4-year institutions, as well as on-line classes, it is possible to get an associate degree and/or bachelor degree without ever leaving Trenton.

Following is a list of degrees (typically two year) currently offered by North Central Missouri College: Associate in Arts, Associate in Arts in Teaching, Associate in General Studies, Associate in Applied Science in the following areas: Accounting, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Equine Management, Applied Technology, Automotive and Machine Technology, Business Management, Business Technology, Construction Technology, Criminal Justice, e-Business Management and Commerce, Early Childhood Development, Information Technology, Manufacturing Technology, EMT, Healthcare Management, Medical Assistant, ADN, Pharmacy Tech, Radiologic Tech, Surgical Tech, Paraprofessional and Substitute Teaching, Technical Teacher Education, and Welding.
There are also many Certificate programs that are typically completed in one year. They include: Accounting/Information Tech, Accounting Clerk, Accounting Professional, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Agriculture – Equine Management, Business Management, Business Tech, Criminal Justice, Information Tech, Marketing Management, Medical Assisting, Medical Insurance and Billing, Medical Transcription, LPN, and Pharmacy Tech.

There are many exciting plans on the horizon for students attending North Central Missouri College. The construction of the Allied Health building, the development of the agricultural Barton Campus, and plans for wind energy technology degrees offer area students cutting edge degrees that will help land that perfect career.

Maybe you are not interested in seeking a degree; consider signing up for a class to keep your skills sharp or to simply get out of the house and around other people. Hundreds of students and faculty members stand ready to help you become successful. Call 660-359-3948 or check out the college website at: www.ncmissouri.edu

Graceland University Degrees at NCMC

Graceland UniversityMany students find that once they finish a 2-year degree at North Central Missouri College that it is impossible to commute to a 4-year college or relocate due to family and career. Since 1992, over 300 area students have completed a 4- year college degree without ever leaving Trenton as enrollees in Graceland University Regional Campus at NCMC. Professor Emeritus, Gloria Carpenter was instrumental in starting the Graceland program in Trenton.

I recall commuting to MWSU in St. Joseph with a few other students. Some days by the time that I would get 3 children off to school, drive 80 miles, and get to class I felt like I had fought WWIII. I liked MWSU, but it was demanding to complete a 4-year degree there due to the commute.

For those seeking education degrees, a far easier solution would be to enroll in Graceland University’s Regional Campus in Trenton. Site Director/Academic Advisor Jeanie Gibson stands ready to help with a seamless transition from NCMC to Graceland. As a former Financial Aid employee for NCMC, she fully understands requirements from both institutions.

Graceland’s program is centered on the philosophy of “Effective Teachers Care, Collaborate, Reflect and Lead. The whole program is built on these concepts. Graceland was founded in 1895 and is sponsored by the Community of Christ. The main campus is in Lamoni, Iowa and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

The students who attend Graceland at NCMC enjoy flexible scheduling allowing them to balance work, family, and classes. Utilizing the cohort model of learning as a group, about 50 students meet two nights per week for nine weeks from 5:45 pm to 9:45pm. One group of about 25 students is at their junior level, while the other group of about 25 is at their senior level. The instructors, most of whom hold doctorate degrees, are in the classroom for hands-on learning in a collaborative way. One advantage of the cohort model is face-to-face interaction between faculty and fellow students. They care about one another and provide a great support network with many becoming life-long friends. Each group of students begins with the same people, continue through the program as a group, and graduate as a group. Up to 75 credit hours from other colleges may be transferred to Graceland for partial degree completion. The bachelor degree from Graceland is completed in just two years.

Students have ranged in age from 20-50, with the average being 20-30, and come from all walks of life. Many teachers who have completed the degree are teaching in area schools.

The education degree from Graceland may include a reading endorsement which prepares prospective students to be a Title I reading instructor (requires an additional 3 week reading practicum and 2 to 3 additional reading classes) or a special education endorsement in order to teach students with special needs. The Bachelor of Arts degree with the reading concentration may be used in Missouri for teaching PK-6 and in Iowa for teaching K-6. A large percentage of Graceland graduates through the NCMC program find careers in their home town area. The NCMC site boasts a 99% placement rate.

Tuition costs at Graceland are comparable to other 4-year institutions. When one considers the cost of driving to another town to complete a degree over a 2-year time frame, it is actually cheaper than commuting to a 4-year institution. Those seeking a master’s degree will find that Graceland has a variety in the education field in the areas of: technology integration, mild/moderate special education, differentiated instruction, and quality schools.

Mrs. Gibson is proud of the quality of the program that Graceland offers to area students and will support them throughout the process. Begin an education degree today by calling her at 660-359-3948, ext. 1288 or drop by the lower level of Alexander Student Center on the Campus of North Central Missouri College.

Shippen Auto Maintenance and Repair

shippen Auto trentonTrenton espouses to be a community in which we encourage young entrepreneurs to come back to their hometown community to open businesses after having obtained an education. Ryan Shippen, owner of Shippen Auto Maintenance and Repair did just that. It is very important that we, as consumers, support local businesses, especially those start-ups that need to build a strong customer base. Shippen, after having been in business for one year, has a long list of satisfied customers who keep coming back for more great service and fair prices.

Born in Trenton to Jim and Amber Shippen, Ryan attended Trenton RIX School, moved to Laredo as a 4th grader, and graduated from Grundy RV at Galt. He is married to the former Catie Provance whose father, Curtis, helps Shippen in the auto repair business.

Ryan is well-educated in the profession of auto repair and maintenance. He graduated from North Central Missouri College with an AA degree followed by graduating from Nashville Auto Diesel College. The Nashville college specializes in engines, brakes, air conditioning, and alignment with focus on both gas and diesel engines. While in college in Nashville, he worked at Peterbilt headquarters called Rush Truck Center.

After graduating from the Nashville college, Ryan worked locally at Auto Dynamics and at People’s Co-op. He decided to open his own business when a great location became available at 1008 Oklahoma Avenue (behind the former Engelman Insurance office) just east of Grundy County Lumber.

The business offers a host of auto services including: auto inspection, tire work, service and maintenance work, and will work on about “anything with wheels”. All general mechanic work is done there, as well as computer diagnostic work. The business can also perform front end work for U joints and ball joints. Small services for diesel trucks are done as needed.

They sell several brands of tires including: Toyo, Hercules, Firestone, Michelin, Remington, Goodyear, Dunlap, HanKook, and Cooper. Tire pricing is very reasonable as compared to the competition. The two things that really set Shippen Auto Repair apart from the competition are that Ryan will perform all tire repairs free for tires purchased there for the life of the tire, as well as performing tire rotation as needed. Typically those who prefer to have tire rotation performed get it done with every other oil change at 6000 miles driven.

In addition to cars and trucks, Shippen repairs lawn mowers, motorcycles, and ATVs. He is not specializing in small engine repair but is willing to consider any type of work that fits his training background.

The business is open Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Give Ryan a call at 660-339-7733 to make an appointment or drop by 1008 Oklahoma Avenue. While he prefers to work by appointments to save customers time, he is willing to work in emergencies or other work as his schedule permits. Let’s work together as a community to support a young, entrepreneur who returned to his hometown to give back to the community.

JII Promotions

JII Promotions TrentonRon Dougan is known throughout north Missouri for volunteerism and selling. As a career agent for Kansas City Life, he also has a second business that many people do not know about. It is called JII Promotions. When former Trenton resident, Stan Reinholz was moving from Trenton, he offered Dougan a chance to take over some of his accounts selling promotional items. As a life-long pencil collector and member of the American Pencil Collector Society, Dougan believed that there would be a nice connection between collecting and marketing pens, pencils, and similar items.

JII Promotions opened in 2001 in Trenton. It is located at 903 Main Street in downtown Trenton. Dougan began marketing to a few area businesses, and his client base has snowballed into a large business. He currently has accounts all over the United States. He is currently retired from his former position of Kansas City Life manager but is still an active agent. He devotes roughly one-half time to each business.

In addition to previously mentioned items, he sells calendars of any size or type which are customized, items for corporate events, golf tournaments, banquets, company Christmas gifts, plaques, trophies, note pads, stress balls, coffee mugs, bags, coolers, yardsticks, and basically any other item that can be personalized. His company offers a quick turnaround time on items. He uses a host of different vendors to give him access to all types of items.

As an active volunteer in the Holiday Hoops Basketball event at NCMC, Dougan sponsored the sportsmanship award. He also orders trophies for Relay for Life.
He really enjoys the business. Those who know Ron say that he is a natural born salesman. As a chamber board member, he sells raffle tickets more than everyone else combined.

After having a 40+ year career in insurance sales and management, Ron likes the variety that JII Promotions has added to his professional life. He does not currently use a website to market his products even though he could. He prefers the personal touch by calling on people in person or by telephone.

In addition to being active in both of his business pursuits, he is very active in Kiwanis having served as President for 2 terms in the past. He has been involved in Boy Scouts for over 40 years and is a Medicine Man in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He also serves as an elder in the First Christian Church and is chairman of wills and bequests. The area Dream Factory also benefits from his volunteerism which is his “real love of making dreams come true for seriously ill children in northwest Missouri.

The Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce has benefitted from Ron’s participation as both an ambassador and board member. The ever-growing NCMC Holiday Hoops event is one of Ron’s favorite activities for the college. It brings hundreds of players, coaches, parents, and fans to the community. The 150th Slate and Tile Committee was a one-time position that Ron worked on along with Tom Mock and Marlene Ralston to raise money for Sesquicentennial events. The American Pencil Society Collector’s Society has been hosted by Dougan in Trenton 3 times, as well as him hosting it in St. Joseph 3 times.

JII Promotion markets locally but has also sold items internationally. He recently sold pencils to a person in Aruba and can get items in various languages. For those persons wishing to order items which could include collector’s plates or other items for upcoming summer family reunions or events, give Ron a call at 660-359-0100 or send an email to rdkclife@att.net

ConAgra

ConAgra Foods is pleased to call Trenton home to one of its key manufacturing plants. It has been a foundational piece of the community for years and is proud to make foods people love.

The ConAgra Foods plant in Trenton was established in 1935 as the Pete Taylor Packing Company which canned tomatoes and pears. Over the years, the plant was purchased and owned by Royal Meat Products of Kansas City (which later became Trenton Foods, The Carnation Company, Nestle and International Home Foods). In 2000, the plant was purchased by ConAgra Foods, the company it capably supports today.

Local residents do not realize in driving by the local plant that it covers 7.6 acres under one roof and employs 420 hard-working, committed people. The plant makes several great branded products including Libby’s, Dennison, Wolf and Van Camp.

At the local Hy-Vee Food Store, there are many branded foods that are manufactured by the Trenton plant, as well as other ConAgra Foods facilities, including Banquet, Chef Boyardee, Egg Beaters, Healthy Choice, Hebrew National, Hunt’s, Marie Callender’s, Orville Redenbacher’s, PAM, Peter Pan and Reddi-whip products. The company is proud to say that ConAgra Foods has brands in 97 percent of America’s households.

Next time you’re at the grocery store, consider purchasing some of these products for yourself and your family, and support your local ConAgra Foods plant.

Stella Bleaux

Stella BleauxStella Bleaux (pronounced Blue) is located in historic downtown Trenton at 907 Main St. Owners Kristi Garrison, Patricia Chumbley and Judy Clem remodeled the old Smith’s Clothing Store to make it a very warm and inviting place to shop. They opened the doors to this upscale bargain store on November 20, 2008. The ladies obtain new, overstock items from various sources and pass those discounts on to their customers.

Prior to opening the store, Kristi says both she and Patricia had booths in the Mini Mall at Five Points and, really, did quite well. They both really liked the idea of opening their own store and offering people a bargain. She says, “We’re just average, run-of-the-mill families that love a bargain. We want to offer those bargains to other people.”

So where did the name ‘Stella Bleaux’ come from? When asked, Kristi said that they had a very difficult time coming up with a name. However, one night while painting in the store, Patricia asked Kristi what name she wanted for a daughter when she, Kristi, was a little girl. Kristi told her that she wanted to name her little girl Stella Bleaux (though she may not have spelled it quite that way for a child). A name for a store was born.

This store offers new clothing with name brands such as South Pole, Nautica, Lucky Brand, Silver Jeans, Bill Blass, Buckle and Angel, just to mention a few. The prices of these name brand clothing items range from $2.98 to $28.98. Accessories such as belts, scarves, wallets and purses or bags are also available at unbelievable prices. Add a pair of shoes from their selection and you’ve got a great outfit!

If you’re looking to add some new décor to your home, Stella Bleaux has a lot to offer. They have many different types of décor for your home that range in price from 48 cents to $40. From time to time, they do have some furniture to offer as well. The prices vary depending on the type of furniture, but you’re sure to find it very affordable. Kristi did say prices are negotiable on many items in the store, excluding new clothes. Some of her favorite items in the store include: flower pots, cowboy décor and Roxy purses.

If you like attending yard sales, you might want to check out Stella’s upstairs Bargain Balcony. Here, you’ll find gently used items for kids and adults alike such as clothing, shoes, household items and décor. Of course, the prices are just right for even the thriftiest person. Kristi stated that at this time, she does not accept any donations of items or any consignment items for the Bargain Balcony.

If you don’t find something you like the first time you go in, be sure to check back often. Kristi said she gets new inventory in at least once a month. Soon, she’ll be able to make smaller orders on a weekly basis as she starts shopping online.

Kristi would like to say ‘thank you’ to the community for being so supportive of the store and for shopping with them. The best way to get in touch with Stella Bleaux at this time is to just stop in. However, they will be getting a phone line soon. Make your way up to Stella Bleaux today and find a great bargain, no matter what you’re looking for!
