It matters not if you come to the business by horse or by car—all clients are treated with a down home friendliness that has made the business a local favorite of home remodelers and builders for over 30 years. Recently, in response to a need by Amish clients, Jim Gross, owner of the company, had a hitch’n post installed. There are Ace Hardware buckets hanging there for oats and water. A hydrant was installed to offer a fresh drink of water to horses after a trek to Trenton on a hot day. When one customer asked Jim’s son, Mike, if he disliked having the horse manure in the lot, Mike responded by stating that he liked having it there daily; it shows that the Amish are doing business at the store on a daily basis. Family matters to Jim Gross; he currently works in the business along with his two sons, Mike and Ron, as well as younger daughter, Julie. Mrs. Gross, Dora, did work in the business for a number of years as well. In addition to the family members, other employees include: John Fisher, Shannon Snuffer, Calvin Brown, Jessica Findling, Michael Berry, Tom Wendt, and Matt Miller. Todd Chumbley, the unofficial business consultant, has his own chair from which to drink coffee daily at the business. Jim’s Building Supply carries a full line of building needs which includes the name brands of Ace Hardware, Mohawk floor covering, and National Hardware. A walk through of the business shows aisle after aisle of paint, vinyl siding, shingles, cabinetry, wall covering, hardware, virtually everything one needs to build or remodel a house, including the kitchen sink. The store is laid out well which makes shopping there easy for consumers. There are many display areas for paint, tile, carpeting, and accessories. Many paint and stain colors are available in pre-mixed colors, or the staff can custom mix any color that is needed to complete a job. The back area of the store contains carpet and lumber warehouse areas. While some items must be special ordered, most homeowners will find that the item needed is stocked on a regular basis. Jim’s furnishes supplies for new homes, as well as remodeling jobs of all types. New building has slowed down a bit as compared to a few years ago, but the remodeling market is very robust, especially after last May’s hail storm. Business hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and until
noon on Saturday.
